Sage suits UK businesses that mainly need reliable accounting, VAT and payroll from software their accountant already knows. Odoo suits businesses that want accounting plus CRM, stock, manufacturing, e-commerce, projects and HR in one system. Both can file VAT returns under Making Tax Digital. The real question is whether your problem is the books or the whole operation.
Odoo vs Sage in one paragraph: Sage is a family of products. Sage Accounting is cloud bookkeeping for small firms, Sage 50 is desktop accounting with cloud connectivity, Sage 200 is a mid-market business management system sold through partners, and Sage Intacct is cloud financial management for larger finance teams. Odoo is a modular ERP where accounting sits alongside CRM, sales, inventory, manufacturing, e-commerce, projects and HR in one database. Sage Accounting and Sage 50 include or offer UK payroll from Sage; Odoo has no native UK payroll and connects to an external provider instead. Both support MTD for VAT. Sage Accounting and Sage 50 publish monthly prices; Sage 200 does not. Odoo charges per user per month. Choose Sage when accounting and payroll are the whole job. Choose Odoo when stock, orders, production or several disconnected tools are slowing you down.
What you are actually comparing
“Sage” can mean four quite different products, so it helps to be precise before comparing anything with Odoo.
- Sage Accounting (cloud): online bookkeeping, invoicing, VAT and payroll included in every plan. Aimed at sole traders and small businesses.
- Sage 50 Accounts: desktop accounting software with cloud connectivity for remote access. Adds sales and purchase orders, stock control and project costing on the Professional tier.
- Sage 200: a business management system for growing SMEs, covering finance, stock, warehouse, sales and purchase order processing, bills of materials and project accounting. Sold and supported mainly through Sage partners.
- Sage Intacct: cloud financial management for mid-sized organisations with multi-entity consolidation and multi-dimensional reporting. It is a finance system, not a full ERP.
Odoo is an open-source-based ERP from Belgium. You start with the apps you need (for example Accounting, Sales and Inventory) and add more later in the same database. The current version is Odoo 20, released in September 2026. In the interest of transparency: OzonLayer is an official Odoo Silver Partner, so we implement Odoo for a living. We have tried to keep this comparison fair, and there are cases below where we would point you to Sage.

Scope: accounting software or a full ERP?
This is the biggest difference, and it matters more than any single feature.
Sage Accounting and Sage 50 are accounting products first. They do the ledger, VAT, bank reconciliation, invoicing and payroll well. Stock control exists (on Accounting Plus and Sage 50), but there is no built-in CRM pipeline, manufacturing planning, online shop, helpdesk or project management. Businesses that need those usually add separate tools and link them together.
Sage 200 goes further into operations. Its feature list includes warehouse management, batch and serial traceability, sales order processing, bills of materials and project accounting. CRM is handled through Sage CRM integration options and add-ons from the Sage Marketplace rather than a native app in the same product.
Odoo covers the whole business in one database. A typical UK distributor might run:
- CRM and Sales for quotes and orders, with prices and discounts per customer.
- Inventory for multiple warehouses, barcode scanning, lots and serial numbers.
- Purchase with reordering rules that raise purchase orders automatically.
- Accounting receiving every invoice, bill and stock valuation entry without re-keying.
- eCommerce or Point of Sale selling from the same stock and price lists.
Manufacturers can add Manufacturing, Quality and Maintenance; service firms can add Project, Timesheets and Helpdesk. The trade-off is that a full ERP needs more thought to set up than an accounting package. See our Odoo services for UK businesses for how we usually phase this.
Pricing in 2026: what you actually pay
All prices below are as published at the time of writing, November 2026, excluding VAT. Both vendors run frequent promotions, so check the live pages before you budget.
Sage list prices
| Product | Published price (ex VAT) | Users |
|---|---|---|
| Sage Accounting Start | £20 per month | 1 |
| Sage Accounting Standard | £43 per month | 3 |
| Sage Accounting Plus | £59 per month | Unlimited |
| Sage 50 Accounts Standard | From £129 per month | 2 included |
| Sage 50 Accounts Professional | From £262 per month | 2 included |
| Sage 200 | Not published; partner quote | By quote |
| Sage Intacct | Plans from £1,200 per month | By quote |
Sage Accounting was advertising 90% off for the first six months when we checked. Payroll is included in each Sage Accounting plan for a set number of employees (one on Start and Standard, five on Plus), then £1.85 per employee per month. Extra users and multi-currency on Sage 50 Standard carry additional fees. Source: Sage Accounting UK plans and the Sage 50 Accounts product page.
Odoo subscription pricing
Odoo charges per user per month and includes hosting, maintenance and support on its cloud. Its public pricing page lists three plans:
- One App Free: one app (plus its dependencies) for unlimited users, free.
- Standard: all apps on Odoo Online.
- Custom: all apps on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers, plus Odoo Studio, multi-company and external API access.
Odoo shows prices in the local currency of the visitor and applies a first-year discount to the initial users ordered, so check the page from the UK for the current sterling rate rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere. Odoo.sh hosting, implementation services and maintenance of custom code are charged separately.
The cost that usually decides it: implementation
Licence fees are rarely the biggest number. Sage Accounting is often self-installed in an afternoon. Sage 200 and Odoo both need a partner-led project once stock, orders and integrations are involved. As an indicative market range, not a quote, UK Odoo projects commonly run from around £5,000 to £15,000 for a small, mostly standard rollout of accounting plus one or two apps, and £20,000 to £50,000 or more for multi-app projects with inventory, manufacturing or integrations. Our Odoo cost guide for the UK breaks this down, and the implementation price calculator gives a rough figure for your scope.
MTD, CIS and UK payroll
Making Tax Digital for VAT
All VAT-registered UK businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns through software that connects to HMRC’s MTD API, as set out in HMRC VAT Notice 700/22. Sage Accounting, Sage 50 and Sage 200 all handle VAT returns under MTD.
Odoo does too. The UK localisation includes a VAT100-ready tax structure and an HMRC module that imports your VAT obligations and submits the return from the tax report. Two details matter in practice: only one company and one user can be connected to HMRC at a time (multi-company groups reconnect per company), and a return more than three months late cannot be sent through Odoo. The submission module is part of the paid Enterprise subscription. Our Odoo Making Tax Digital guide walks through the setup.
MTD for Income Tax is a separate regime for sole traders and landlords (from April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000). It does not apply to limited companies, so for most businesses comparing Odoo and Sage 200 it is not a deciding factor.
Construction Industry Scheme
Sage Accounting Standard and Plus support CIS, and Sage 50 offers it for an additional fee. Odoo’s UK localisation has a CIS module that produces the deduction report and sends the monthly return to HMRC. Odoo also generates Bacs payment files for supplier payments and direct debits.
UK payroll: Sage’s clear advantage
Sage is strong here. Payroll is built into Sage Accounting plans, and Sage 50 Payroll is a long-established HMRC-recognised product with pensions auto-enrolment.
Odoo does not have a native UK payroll localisation. Its payroll app has rules for countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the United States, but not the UK. Odoo’s UK documentation offers a connector to Employment Hero as the payroll route. Most UK Odoo users keep their existing payroll provider (including Sage Payroll) and post a monthly payroll journal into Odoo by import or a simple template. That works well, but it is a second system to budget for.
Multi-company, multi-currency, stock and reporting
Multi-currency. Sage Accounting offers it on the Plus plan, Sage 50 includes it on Professional (with a fee on Standard), and Sage 200 supports it. In Odoo it is available on all paid plans, with automatic exchange-rate updates and realised and unrealised gains and losses posted for you.
Multi-company. Sage Accounting treats each business as its own set of books. Sage 50 Professional can produce management reports across companies, and Sage Intacct is built for multi-entity consolidation. Odoo runs several companies in one database on the Custom plan, with shared or separate products and contacts and inter-company rules that turn a sale in one company into a purchase in another.
Inventory and stock. Sage Accounting Plus and Sage 50 track stock levels and values, which is fine for a small product range. Sage 200 adds warehouses, batch and serial tracking and bills of materials. Odoo Inventory adds routes (for example pick, pack, ship), reordering rules, barcode apps, landed costs and FIFO or average costing, all linked to sales, purchasing and manufacturing.
Reporting. All the Sage products cover standard financial reports, and Sage 200 and Sage Intacct add dashboards and multi-dimensional reporting. Odoo provides the profit and loss, balance sheet, aged debtors and creditors and the VAT report, plus pivot views and spreadsheets on any data. Because sales, stock and finance share one database, margin by product or customer comes from the same records rather than an export.
Integrations, hosting and implementation effort
Integrations and API. Sage products have a large UK ecosystem of add-ons, bank feeds and marketplace apps, and Sage 200 integrates closely with Microsoft 365. Odoo has its own app store and an external API on the Custom plan, which is how it usually connects to marketplaces, payroll, shipping and banking tools. Fewer integrations are needed in the first place, because CRM, e-commerce and stock are already inside. Our Odoo integration services cover the common UK connections.
Hosting. Sage Accounting and Sage Intacct are cloud-only. Sage 50 is desktop software with cloud connectivity. Sage 200 Standard runs in the cloud, while Professional offers flexible deployment, often partner-hosted. Odoo runs on Odoo Online, on Odoo.sh, or on your own servers or cloud provider (the latter two need the Custom plan).
Implementation effort. A small business can move to Sage Accounting with an accountant’s help in days. Sage 200 and Odoo projects usually take weeks to months, because you are redesigning how orders, stock and finance flow, not just loading a chart of accounts. For Odoo, a phased plan (accounting and sales first, then inventory or manufacturing) keeps risk down. Choosing the right partner matters; our guide to choosing an Odoo partner lists the questions to ask.
Accountant familiarity. Many UK accountants and bookkeepers already know Sage, and that is a genuine advantage at year end. Odoo is less common in UK practices, although its accountant role, standard reports and exports are straightforward. Give your accountant a user login and a short walkthrough before the first VAT quarter.
When Sage is the better choice
- You mainly need bookkeeping, VAT, invoicing and payroll, and your operations already run well in other tools.
- You want UK payroll in the same product from the same vendor.
- You are a sole trader or micro business that values a low monthly price and minimal setup.
- Your accountant runs your books in Sage and you want to keep that relationship simple.
- You are a finance-led mid-sized group that needs consolidation and dimensional reporting more than operations software (consider Sage Intacct).
When Odoo is the better choice
- You hold stock, sell through several channels or manufacture, and Sage plus spreadsheets no longer keeps up.
- You are paying for separate CRM, e-commerce, helpdesk or project tools and re-keying data between them.
- You want one database for several companies or currencies, with inter-company transactions handled automatically.
- You want a published per-user price for the whole system rather than a module-by-module quote.
- You expect to need workflow changes; Odoo can be configured with Studio or extended through Odoo customisation.

Moving from Sage to Odoo
Most Sage to Odoo moves follow the same pattern:
- Pick a clean cut-over date, ideally the start of a VAT quarter or financial year, so the last return is filed from Sage and the next from Odoo.
- Migrate master data: chart of accounts, customers, suppliers, products and opening stock.
- Bring across balances: trial balance plus open sales and purchase invoices, rather than years of transaction history. Keep Sage in read-only mode for the archive.
- Reconnect the essentials: bank feeds, HMRC for MTD, and the payroll journal from your payroll provider.
- Run a parallel month for reconciliations before switching off Sage.
Our Sage to Odoo migration guide covers each step in detail, including exports from Sage 50 and Sage 200. For a supported project, see Odoo implementation in the United Kingdom.

Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo better than Sage?
It depends on the job. Sage is a strong choice when you mainly need accounting, VAT and UK payroll from software your accountant knows. Odoo is the better fit when you also need CRM, inventory, manufacturing, e-commerce or projects in one system. Many businesses move from Sage to Odoo when stock and orders outgrow their accounting package.
Does Odoo support Making Tax Digital for VAT?
Yes. Odoo's UK localisation includes an HMRC module that imports your VAT obligations and submits the VAT return through the MTD API from the tax report. Only one company and one user can be connected to HMRC at a time, and returns more than three months late must be handled with HMRC directly. The module is part of the paid Enterprise subscription.
Does Odoo have UK payroll like Sage?
No. Odoo has no native UK payroll localisation. Its UK documentation offers a connector to Employment Hero, and most UK Odoo users keep their existing payroll provider, including Sage Payroll, and post a monthly payroll journal into Odoo. Sage includes payroll in its Sage Accounting plans and sells Sage 50 Payroll separately.
How much does Sage cost compared with Odoo?
At the time of writing, November 2026, Sage Accounting is £20, £43 or £59 per month excluding VAT, and Sage 50 Accounts starts at £129 or £262 per month. Sage 200 has no published price. Odoo charges per user per month on its public pricing page, with one app free for unlimited users. Implementation is usually the larger cost for Sage 200 and Odoo.
Is Odoo a good alternative to Sage 200?
Often, yes. Both cover finance, stock, warehouses, orders and bills of materials. Odoo adds native CRM, manufacturing planning, e-commerce, point of sale, projects and HR in the same database, and publishes its pricing. Sage 200 has deeper ties with Microsoft 365 and a larger base of UK finance staff who know it. Compare both against your real processes.
Can my accountant work with Odoo?
Yes. Accountants can be given their own login in Odoo to review ledgers, reconcile and download the profit and loss, balance sheet, aged balances and VAT report. Odoo is less familiar than Sage in UK practices, so a short walkthrough before the first VAT quarter helps. Exports to spreadsheets are available for year-end work.
How long does it take to move from Sage to Odoo?
A small accounting-only move can take a few weeks. Projects that add inventory, manufacturing or integrations usually take several months, because processes are redesigned as well as data being moved. Most firms migrate master data and opening balances, choose a cut-over at the start of a VAT quarter and run a parallel month before switching Sage off.
